David E. Joanis
David has practiced in all aspects of family law since 1975. He is respected as an attorney in complex custody and placement matters. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Wisconsin chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), an international organization of legal mental health professionals dedicated to the resolution of family conflict. Family law requires expertise in the areas of custody, placement, business valuation, child support, maintenance, tax and property division. David has recognized expertise in all of those areas and has successfully represented many client during his career in trials and appeals, arbitrations, and mediations. David is also certified as a collaborative divorce attorney. David is skilled in cases which require extensive background in matters of military and Federal government benefits. David client's value him for his knowledge and his good judgment. David has been named as a "Super Lawyer" in Wisconsin every year since 2006. He is also listed in Best Lawyers In America.
David served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for three years. He then attended the Marshal – Wythe School of Law at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, graduating in 1975. He was admitted to the Wisconsin bar in that year. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, in 1969 and practiced law in La Crosse from 1975 through 1990. He has practiced in Madison since moving here in 1990. He was a member of the firm of Balisle and Roberson between 2003 and 2016.
David is a member of the Dane County, Wisconsin, and American Bar associations. He is a founding board member of Four Seasons Theatre, a successful musical theater group based in Madison.
Atty. Joanis is the co-author with Atty. Linda S. Balisle of "Compensation on Dissolution of Marriage for Spousal Contributions to Education," 31 Am. Jur. Trials 1, and a co-author with Kenneth Waldron, PhD of "Understanding and Collaborative the Treating Parental Alienation Syndrome," American Journal of Family Law, Volume X, No 3, Fall 1996. David and Dr. Waldron also co-authored "Parenting Coordination: An Alternative Dispute Resolution Approach for High – Conflict Families," Parts I and II, Wisconsin Journal of Family Law July 2007/In volume 27, Number 3 and Number 4.
